The Board of Aldermen approved first reading of bill 65-75, an ordinance authorizing the city to participate in a new national opioid settlement with Purdue Pharma LP. Allison, a finance staff member, said the city has already received $211,000 over the past two years from opioid settlements and that the funds are restricted for specific types of expenditures and must be appropriated during the budget process.
"We have received 211 or 211,000, so far over the last 2 years, and we have not expended any of these funds because it is restricted funding for a certain type of expense, that is allocated during budget season," Allison said, describing the accounting status and expenditure restrictions.
The board voted 6-0 on first reading. Staff indicated the ordinance authorizes the city to execute documents related to participation in the settlement; any expenditure of received settlement funds will be addressed in future budget deliberations under the restrictions that govern those funds.
