Committee members reviewed three planned international visits and asked staff to invite school organizers to the next meeting for detailed planning.
Christine Friess reported tentative student-exchange dates: Nichinan students are scheduled to visit Oct. 11–18 with seven students expected; Sant'Arcangelo visitors were noted for Oct. 4–11. The committee discussed typical visit elements — welcome receptions, gift distributions and mayoral meetings — and agreed to invite teachers who coordinate exchanges to the September meeting for logistical coordination.
The committee confirmed a Carrickfergus (Northern Ireland) delegation will be in Portsmouth Oct. 9; the City has reserved the Portsmouth Room and Council Chambers for an event that evening and asked several committee members to attend. Alan McGee, son of Nobel McGee (a founder of that sister-city relationship), was identified as a local contact for the Carrickfergus visit.
Christine Friess also reported that the mayor had accepted an application to designate Nelson, New Zealand, as a friendship city and that the mayor will forward the application to Nelson’s officials; the committee awaits their reply.
Members asked staff to invite Laura LaValle and Sam Tambarelli (teachers who run exchange trips) or other school representatives to the next committee meeting to firm up schedules, budgets and reception plans. No formal funding action was taken at the meeting.
