During public comment Monday, Portsmouth resident Irene Bartholomew raised concerns about a recent resurfacing of Gate Street. Bartholomew said the city used an unfamiliar, “very soft” paving treatment that she described as deforming under vehicle turning, leaving seams and lumps, and adhering to granite curbs and a neighbor’s drain pipe. Bartholomew said the material produces wheel‑track “swirls” on warm days and that similar materials used elsewhere (she cited a Springfield, Vt., example) failed after snow‑plow operations. She asked the council to “stop using that treatment” and suggested Public Works staff member Peter Rice as the person the city should ask for a solution. Mayor and council acknowledged the concern and said the item will be referred to the appropriate Public Works staff for follow‑up. No council action or vote occurred on the matter at the meeting.
