Commission continues Motel 6 digital sign request after questions over cladding and off‑premise advertising

The Clark County Planning Commission on June 17 continued a sign design review for a freestanding and electronic-message digital sign at a motel property, asking the applicant to return with additional design details and confirmation from the property owner about the sign’s permitted content.

Jacob Hosmer, representing Hart Lauer Signs, told commissioners the existing 100‑foot sign was being replaced in a new location and that the proposed new freestanding sign would match the existing height and animated area. Hosmer said the applicant sought to omit a full pole cladding because cladding would increase wind load, footing size and cost.

Commissioner Steve Kirk pressed the applicant about pole cladding and about whether the digital sign would display off‑premise advertising. Staff clarified that county code does not permit off‑premise commercial advertising on such signs; “everything you put up on that sign has to be Motel 6,” the planner said. Hosmer told the commission the motel’s brand might change to a Park Inn by Radisson and that the applicant would confirm which brand would be displayed.

Kirk said he wanted a minimal cladding option and a firm answer from the property owner on allowable sign content. The commission voted to continue the item to the July 1 meeting to allow the applicant to return with a cladding design and owner confirmation. The applicant agreed to the continuance.

Staff also explained that a digital sign may change copy and can display videos, and that the county code includes guidelines limiting how long a message may display before changing. The continuance leaves the item open until the applicant supplies the requested clarifications and revised drawings.
