Gautier council approves emergency sewer repair, pays $171,270 for Hwy 90 work; consent items pass

The Gautier City Council on Jan. 7 approved an emergency repair to a collapsed 30-inch gravity sewer main in the Robertsdale area and approved related payments and consent items.
Public works staff reported the 30-inch gravity sewer main was found collapsed the week before Christmas and the repair was made under emergency authority. The council approved payment to Bottom 2 Top Construction for the emergency repair after staff said the work was needed immediately to prevent sewage impacts to nearby waterways.
Councilman Anderson thanked staff and the contractor for preventing a major sewage overflow into the Sioux Bayou and asked clerks to correct the minutes’ language that incorrectly identified the receiving water as Mary Walker Bayou. “This is the Sioux Bayou and not the Mary Walker Bayou,” he said; the record was corrected.
The council also approved a pay application and docket of claims that included a $171,270.20 payment to Bottom 2 Top LLC for Highway 90 water and sewer lines work at the former Singing River Mall property, citing year-end processing needs to lock in payment in calendar year 2024. Several consent items were approved in a single motion, including acceptance of monetary donations for the fire department and Bayou fireworks and authorization to accept court case-management software from Southern Automated Systems. Minutes from special meetings in December were approved with corrections requested by council members.

Council members and staff repeatedly thanked Jackson County Utility Authority, public works staff, H2O and Bottom 2 Top Construction for prompt holiday repairs that avoided environmental harm. City staff said the emergency repair work was completed during the holidays and that partnerships with utility authorities aided rapid detection and response.
