Brentwood Select Board member John Morgan resigns effective Aug. 31

John Morgan, a member of the Brentwood Select Board, announced at the Aug. 18 meeting that he will resign effective Aug. 31, saying his new job responsibilities — including extensive international travel — prevent him from giving the role the time it requires. Morgan said he had regularly participated remotely before his most recent election and criticized the town’s decision to bar him from remote participation, saying it “sets a troubling precedent” and could discourage working professionals from running for local office. “Denying a duly elected member the ability to participate remotely, especially based on professional responsibilities that were known at the time of election, sets a troubling precedent,” Morgan said. The resignation letter Morgan read at the meeting thanked residents and noted his pride in accomplishments during his tenure, including expanded 24/7 fire and EMS coverage and changes to recreation and economic development. “It’s been a tremendous honor to serve this town,” Morgan said. “I love Brentwood, and I’m deeply grateful that my family and I call this beautiful community home.” Select Board members responded with thanks and praise for Morgan’s service during the meeting. The chair accepted Morgan’s written resignation; no further formal action was required at the meeting to process it. Morgan said he will remain active in the community after leaving the board. Looking ahead, the board did not announce an interim or appointment process during the meeting; any vacancy-filling steps were not specified in the discussion recorded at the session.
