Council authorizes advertising for bids for public-works street sweeper truck

The Gautier City Council on Aug. 19 authorized staff to advertise for bids for a street sweeper truck for the public-works department. City staff said the existing sweeper, purchased used in 2017, has an engine failure and mechanics advised it cannot be repaired. Staff told the council there are remaining equipment funds from prior borrowing that would cover a replacement, so the purchase would not require a new budget appropriation. Mark Seymour assisted staff in drafting specifications for the replacement and explained the procurement would follow competitive bidding laws because of the anticipated price. During discussion Councilman Fuller said he expected the vehicle price to be roughly $350,000; staff said the advertisement will solicit bids and return results for council review and award. Council approved a motion by Councilman Fuller, seconded by Councilman Alvin, to advertise for bids. The authorization allows the city to solicit competitive proposals; council did not award a contract at the meeting. Staff said bids will be returned and a purchase decision will come back to council consistent with procurement rules.
