At the Aug. 4 meeting the Candia Board of Selectmen discussed capacity and workload concerns for the town’s groundskeeper, identified in the meeting as Steve. Selectmen reported seeing overflowing trash cans at town parks and raised questions about whether Steve has enough support to keep up with mowing, trash pickup and occasional tree work.
Board members said Steve has served the town for many years and praised his work ethic but voiced concern that he appears overwhelmed and may need help or a more structured schedule. One member said the town has budgeted funds that could be used to hire outside contractors for major tasks such as removing dead trees if Steve prefers not to do that work.
Selectmen discussed that trips to the recycling center made on behalf of the town are compensated; one comment in the meeting noted a $30 payment per trip to the recycling center, which was described as a per‑trip payment rather than a weekly wage. The board discussed the idea of a checklist or schedule to help prioritize tasks and said they will explore staffing options but did not take formal action at the meeting.
Selectmen also mentioned possible candidates who help with town work informally, including Justin (identified conversationally) and local residents who have assisted with landscaping; one board member said a town employee, Joey Philbrook, recently moved to a full‑time position with the Salem Fire Department. The board said they will discuss staffing solutions in a nonpublic setting if personnel matters require confidentiality.
