Council approves permanent utility easement for Smelterville fire training site

The Cape Girardeau City Council approved on first reading an ordinance accepting a permanent utility easement located at Lot 4, Block 1 of Smelterville on Aug. 4, citing the need for access to sewer infrastructure related to a planned fire-training site.

"This ordinance accepts a permanent utility easement along the South Sprague right away between Lot 3 And 5," said Mister Pullit during the first reading. He said the easement is needed to access the sewer line and manhole maintenance as the department moves forward with the fire training site project.

Council members praised the multi-party effort on the project. At least one council member thanked the fire department and the Cape Girardeau Public School District for their partnership, noting the project had been "a long time coming." Chief Morris and fire-department personnel were acknowledged by council for their work on the project.

Action taken: Bill 25 89, the ordinance accepting the permanent utility easement, passed on first reading as part of regular business. The council recorded a voice vote in favor.

Implementation note: City staff said the easement provides necessary permanent access for sewer maintenance connected to the site; further project details and construction timing were not provided at the meeting.
