Mayor and council members at the Aug. 18 Cape Girardeau City Council meeting thanked residents and staff after voters approved a recent water-rate measure, and said the city will begin work to strengthen its water system.
The council’s remarks followed the referendum result earlier this summer. "We are extraordinarily grateful," the mayor said, thanking voters, staff and Alliance Water representatives for information and assistance. "We've been the city has been talking about this issue for a year, and, it it took that long to really kind of, get get all of the information out and and clearly explained, to to the community, and and that was, certainly worth it."
City officials said the approved measure will support near-term and longer-term work on the utility. "We're gonna make sure that we are completely transparent. The city manager and I were just talking today. How are we going to demonstrate that we're going to make good on the things that we said? We're gonna make sure that this plan is executed and that you see that plan being executed," a council member said.
Council members framed the investment as long-term infrastructure maintenance. "We have we are providing for the future with this water treatment facility. I mean, the last 1 lasted a hundred years," another council member said, adding that future generations will benefit from work now.
No ordinance or formal council action on the utility rate itself was taken at the Aug. 18 meeting; the comments reviewed the recent voter-approved measure and thanked participants. Staff and Alliance Water representatives were acknowledged in the chamber for their roles in public outreach and technical work.
City officials directed staff to keep project information publicly available and emphasized transparency. The mayor noted the city website contains project timelines and materials for residents who want further detail.
