Selectmen approve new location for 'Welcome to Alton' sign on town-owned triangle at Homestead Place

The Alton Board of Selectmen voted Aug. 12 to change the planned location of a donated "Welcome to Alton" sign to a town-owned triangular parcel at Homestead Place after the New Hampshire Department of Transportation declined to permit the originally planned placement in a traffic circle. Town Administrator (speaker 4) told the board that DOT had indicated the sign would require breakaway posts on the state right-of-way; George, the DOT area representative, researched the site and found a small triangle of land owned by the town where the sign can sit without a state permit. The administrator said the proposed location offers an equal or better vantage point. Selectman (speaker 4) moved to change the location to the triangle at Homestead Place; Selectman (Chair) (speaker 1) seconded the motion. The board approved the location change by unanimous voice vote. Board members thanked the DOT representative for helping find a solution. No further permits from the state are required for the town-owned parcel, the administrator said.
