Boulder council proclaims September 2025 Pollinator Appreciation Month and signals intent to join Berlin Urban Nature Pact

Boulder City Council read and celebrated the citys Pollinator Appreciation Month declaration on Sept. 4, acknowledging more than a decade of local efforts to protect pollinators and biodiversity. Council member Speer read the proclamation; the text declares September 2025 as the official Pollinator Appreciation Month and was signed by Mayor Erin Brockett.
City staff detailed local programs tied to pollinator protection, including the 2014 ban on neonicotinoid pesticides, an annual bee festival on Sept. 13, the Pollinator Advocates program and nonchemical integrated pest-management practices in parks and open space. A city official said, "Pollinators are essential for the health and resilience of our communities," and noted Boulder has reduced pesticide use in parklands and developed a mosquito-management program that emphasizes biodiversity-based controls.
Staff also announced the city's intent to sign the Berlin Urban Nature Pact, a global framework for municipal biodiversity action, and said Boulder has already met many of the pact's targets. Representatives of local partner groups including Bee Chicas, Nature Everywhere, Trust for the Play Foundation Tree Trust and Environment for the Americas were present. Council did not take a separate vote on code or budget items; the declaration is a public recognition and the city said it will share details with the community about what joining the Berlin pact will mean for Boulder.
