Commissioners approve letter urging WSU to keep local extension director in Walla Walla County

The Walla Walla County Board of Commissioners voted 3-0 on Aug. 26, 2025, to approve a letter urging Washington State University to retain a dedicated extension director for Walla Walla County rather than folding the role into a larger regional position.

Commissioners said the position supports agriculture, 4-H and Master Gardener programs that are central to the county’s economy and community life. Chair Fulmer introduced the item and described the county’s concern that WSU might not replace the outgoing director because of funding and reorganization.

“I support the letter personally. I think it’s extremely important that we have that director position here for all the reasons. We’re an ag community,” Chair Fulmer said. Commissioner Kimball, speaking from experience as a farmer and user of extension services, said, “I agree with everything you've said… I think this replacing that position of Walla Walla County is incredibly important.” Commissioner Clayton added that the county relies on extension programs for ag services, tourism and master gardening.

County staff indicated Debbie reviewed the draft before it was presented to the board. Commissioner Clayton moved to approve the letter of support as presented and a second was made; the board voted unanimously with all three commissioners voting “aye.” The clerk recorded the motion as approved 3 to 0.

The meeting record shows no further conditions or timelines attached to the letter; commissioners did not specify when WSU would be contacted or when a response is expected. The board returned the letter as approved and adjourned afterward.
