Island County delays budget approval to December; seeks funding partner for septic prototype project

Island County commissioners told meeting attendees on Sept. 2 that they have canceled two budget meetings for the week and will move final budget approval from October to December, giving staff additional time to resolve outstanding issues.
“I wanted to announce that there will be no budget meetings this week… we have a little bit of time to get some issues resolved,” a commissioner said during announcements, adding that the board had decided to approve the budget in December rather than October.
The board also said it is seeking partners to help pay for a planned septic prototype project on Whidbey Island. A commissioner said Thursday meetings are scheduled with Merchant McIntyre to discuss potential funding and that the prototype could be sited in Freeland or Clinton; the county had not yet chosen a final location.
No formal budget vote or funding commitment for the septic prototype was recorded at the Sept. 2 meeting. Commissioners said they would continue discussions with Merchant McIntyre and others to identify possible funding sources before making a formal proposal to the board.
The board’s announcements also included scheduling notes: a work session and budget day were mentioned for the following day, and upcoming joint tourism and Island Transit board meetings were listed by commissioners.
No formal actions approving budget changes or allocating money for the septic project were taken at the meeting.
