The Lake County Health and Community Services Committee on Sept. 2 approved a contract modification with North Chicago High School District 187 for a comprehensive career pathway program funded with Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) youth funds.
Director Serena (county workforce services) told the committee the program provides job readiness, career awareness and paid work experiences. “North Chicago High School has demonstrated success in this area,” she said, noting the program is entering its sixth year and has grown from about 15 students initially to a current participation of 35 seniors.
“All of the students earn their high school diploma skills gain. They gain skills around career awareness, job readiness skills, understanding what it means to work in the workplace and through some paid work experience, and then transitioning into post secondary education, employment or enlisting in the military,” Serena said. She reported a 100% graduation rate for participating students and that “about 70 80% transition onto post secondary education with the majority going on to CLC.”
The contract modification provides $137,900 for the program with a one-year renewal option. The motion, moved by Member Kasman and seconded by Member Maine, passed by voice vote with one member excused.
Why it matters: WIOA youth funding supports in-school work experience and credential attainment; the county’s contract sustains a program that staff say results in high school graduation and substantial postsecondary transition rates for participants.
Next steps: County staff will finalize the contract modification and continue oversight of program delivery with school-district partners.
