The Lake County Planning, Building, Zoning and Environment Committee approved a petition on Sept. 3 to vacate an unimproved, platted right-of-way east of Lawson Road in the Fox River Springs subdivision in Antioch Township. Frank Olson, a senior planner with the Planning, Building and Development Department, presented the petition and recommended approval.
Olson told the committee the subject right-of-way is 42.5 feet wide and that the total area proposed for vacation is 5,227 square feet (about 0.12 acres). He said the plat of vacation includes a proposed 15-foot easement to preserve existing stormwater infrastructure.
The nut of the action: staff and the Board of Vacations determined there was no current or future public need for the platted right-of-way, and the Antioch Township Highway Department has an easement to maintain the stormwater system. Olson said there were no objections from the township highway commissioner, adjacent property owners or utility companies, and the Board of Vacations recommended unanimous approval.
Committee members asked whether there had been public comments; Olson reported none. Member Frank moved approval and Member Kanishniak seconded. The committee recorded a unanimous “Aye” and the motion passed.
Discussion versus decision: the record shows staff presented the technical details, the Board of Vacations had previously recommended approval, and the committee’s vote constituted the formal action to forward approval (motion and vote recorded). No additional direction to staff or conditions were recorded during the meeting.
Clarifying details provided at the meeting noted the exact petition identifier (PTRL-001061-2025), the 15-foot stormwater easement on the plat of vacation, and that approval would place the property on the tax rolls.
The committee’s approval implements the Board of Vacations recommendation and allows the property owners currently maintaining the area to continue to do so legally under the recorded easement arrangements. Any further administrative recording of the vacation will follow standard county processes.
