County issues tropical-storm watch and coastal flooding warnings ahead of expected system

County manager reported a tropical-storm watch for Currituck's coastal waters with likely arrival of tropical-storm-force winds Wednesday evening into Thursday, expected minor-to-moderate coastal flooding with localized major tidal flooding, higher erosion confidence and a high risk of rip currents.
Currituck County staff told the Board of Commissioners on Aug. 18 the county is under a tropical-storm watch for coastal waters as a system expected to become Tropical Storm Aaron approaches the region.
The county manager reported the National Hurricane Center's 5 p.m. update and said the most likely timing for tropical-storm-force winds is Wednesday evening through early Thursday morning. "There is widespread minor to moderate coastal flooding expected by Thursday with localized major tidal flooding possibly along our coastline on Thursday," the county manager said. The manager said the forecast calls for about one-half inch of rain with higher isolated totals, increased confidence in erosion and a high risk of rip currents.
County staff said access and conditions for off-road areas (the county's off-road vehicle areas) are the primary operational concern and that the county will continue to monitor the system and make decisions as conditions change.
Discussion vs. decision: staff provided an operational briefing and watch status (discussion and advisory). No emergency declaration or evacuation order was made during the meeting; staff said it would advise the board and public if further decisions were needed.
Residents should monitor National Hurricane Center updates and county advisories, the county manager said; staff said further announcements would be made if forecasts change.
