Trenton — The City Council on Sept. 2 authorized two street-maintenance actions: a $100,000 allocation for joint sealing work under a 2023 cooperative bid and an award of the 2025 concrete street sectioning program to Savone Cement for a contract price up to $500,000. Department of Public Service Director Mister Sargent told council the city joined a cooperative bid in 2023 to obtain pavement joint sealing prices and that joint sealing is a preventative maintenance strategy that “extends pavement life by preventing water and debris from damaging the road’s foundation.” Staff requested $100,000 from local and major streets capital improvement accounts and asked to extend the 2023 contract with Al’s Asphalt to complete the work citywide; council approved the allocation and contract extension unanimously. On the concrete street sectioning program, the city publicly opened bids on Feb. 25, 2025; the second-lowest responsible responsive bid was from Savone Cement. Based on the city engineer’s recommendation and reference checks, staff requested awarding the project to Savone Cement for up to $500,000, with the option to extend the same pricing into 2026 subject to city administrator approval. Council approved that award unanimously; during discussion council asked whether the change would delay project schedules, and staff said they expected a slight delay but would continue work. Both actions were described as funded from local major streets capital improvement accounts and recorded as unanimously approved.
