Accessibility commission honors Ferndale Pride for event accessibility efforts

The Ferndale Accessibility and Inclusion Advisory Commission delivered its annual report to the City Council and presented its annual accessibility award to Ferndale Pride for multi-year improvements to event accessibility.
"Our mission is to help make Ferndale a place of choice to work, live, and visit for people with disabilities," said the commission chair during the presentation. The commission noted work across departments to reduce barriers in physical spaces, communications and special events, including accessible parking, improved signage contrast and better online accessibility.
The award recognized Ferndale Pride—s sustained effort to make the festival more accessible: the commission cited clearer website information, added restrooms at event locations, quieter performance options and a sensory booth where attendees can take a break from noise and heat. Staff said the event offers free earplugs, fidget toys and sign-language interpretation at several stages.
The commission encouraged residents and businesses to nominate organizations for future awards and noted two commission seats are open. It said digital-accessibility requirements from state guidance will increase in 2026—2027, and the commission is educating city staff on compliance.
Outcome: Presentation and award were informational; no council action was required. The commission invited nominations and volunteers to apply for open seats.
