District outlines summer academies, training and opening-day professional learning

District leaders told the board on Aug. 19, 2025 that the Salem School District offered a substantial slate of summer professional development and prepared staff training for the opening days before students return.
Assistant Superintendent Angela Markley said the district recorded 329 facilitator/participant instances for summer academies and trainings (some staff attended multiple sessions). She described three broad categories of work: collaborative curriculum sessions (for example, K-5 instructional calendar work), learning/training activities (such as Think Kids and elementary literacy resources), and committee work (including generative AI and strategic-plan committees).
Markley previewed the opening days schedule for staff: teachers return Aug. 21 and will receive multiple days of targeted learning, including K-8 mathematics training on the updated Eureka curriculum, planning for tier 3 reading supports, and mandatory trainings (mandatory reporting, bullying and harassment, suicide prevention and blood-borne pathogens). Palmer added that paraprofessionals will receive full-day training on technology use and behavior interventions.
Administrators said the summer work is intended to provide sustained professional time and alignment ahead of the school year and to support program rollouts such as the new device policy.
