Board moves first monthly meeting to 5:30 p.m., effective October 2025, after debate on access

The Moore County Board of Commissioners voted to change the start time of the first regular meeting each month from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., beginning Oct. 7, 2025.

The schedule change was proposed to improve public access; commissioners said earlier that evening’s public attendance suggested better turnout for evening meetings. Supporters said evening meetings allow working residents, teachers and others who cannot leave daytime employment to attend. One commissioner argued evening meetings produce “much better participation from the public,” and said having consistent evening meetings would avoid confusion over meeting times.

Opponents raised concerns about seniors and others who may face difficult or unsafe evening travel, and about the burden on county staff who routinely attend and support meetings. One commissioner said evening driving in winter conditions on two‑lane county roads could pose a safety concern for older residents and families with children engaged in evening activities. Commissioners noted staff availability concerns and the potential for meetings to extend late into the night; the county manager indicated staff would work scheduling adjustments as needed.

After discussion, a motion to amend the regular meeting schedule took effect with an adopted resolution; the first regular meeting to be affected will be Oct. 7, 2025, at 5:30 p.m., consistent with statutory posting and publication requirements. The board recorded a roll call indicating at least one commissioner opposed the change. County staff said the change requires publication and that the earliest meeting affected would be October due to legal notice timelines.

Commissioners said remote streaming and digital access remain available for residents who cannot attend in person. The board also asked staff to consider transportation or other accommodations for residents who may have difficulty traveling at night.
