Wildwood staff propose veterans wall of honor; staff exploring costs and grant support

City staff briefed the Planning and Parks Committee on Aug. 18 about a proposal to create a veterans wall of honor in City Hall and asked for direction on design, location and possible funding sources.

Staff said the city has increased veterans programming in recent years — including hometown hero banners and a veterans breakfast — and that a permanent recognition wall in a City Hall hallway could provide a lasting public memorial. The department has identified a blank wall outside the council chambers as a potential location but said sound panels in the hallway may complicate mounting options.

Cost estimates vary depending on materials and fabrication; staff cited typical ranges of about $5,000 to $30,000 depending on whether the wall uses acrylic/plexiglass, engraved metal plates or other materials. Staff also noted that the Missouri Humanities Grant program offers awards from $5,000 to $15,000 that could offset part of the cost.

The committee discussed options for plaque styles, donor/dedication walls, and whether to pursue POW/MIA city designation through Jefferson Barracks’ program; staff said that POW/MIA designation is an inexpensive process (about $100 application) but includes recognition requirements. Committee members suggested reaching out to local schools, hospitals and community groups for supplier referrals and discussed lower‑cost fabrication approaches (for example, a mounted background panel with small engraved plates) to control costs while allowing future additions.

Staff will continue to research local vendors and grant opportunities and plan to include the project in the 2026 budget if feasible.
