Council approves replacement of mobile data terminals in fire apparatus to maintain connectivity and security

The Jefferson City Council adopted a resolution authorizing the fire department to replace mobile data terminals (MDTs) in fire response vehicles. Staff said the existing MDT hardware and router connectivity are at end of service life and the software security support will end in October, meaning the devices will no longer meet the city’s IT security requirements.
Fire staff said funding for the replacement will come from the fire equipment replacement capital improvement account; they reported that money is available in that account and that the MDT replacement was the highest priority equipment need identified at this time.
Council approved the resolution by roll call. Staff said the replacement is necessary to avoid interruptions in vehicle connectivity and to maintain required security support for software and network hardware.
