Blue Springs community development report: construction values down, sign permits up

City of Blue Springs community development staff reported to the Planning Commission on June activity and year-to-date trends, saying total square footage and construction costs are down compared with 2024 while single-family permit volumes are steady. The staff presenter (filling in for Logan) said single-family home permits remained consistent on a year-to-date comparison, though June single-family permits were down about 50% from June 2024. Construction-cost values and total permitted square footage showed a notable drop compared with June 2024, while sign-permit activity has nearly doubled for May compared with the same month last year. Staff noted a recent denial by City Council of an alternate sign plan for a Tim Hortons on May 5, and that several items — Hawes Estate, Asphaltic Surfaces, and Eagles Ridge PRO — were forwarded to City Council for hearings on July 7. The downtown student mural project was approved on June 23. Code enforcement case volume was reported as similar to the previous year. Staff described a modest rebound in permit intake after a lull, saying that several final plats recently approved had generated a wave of subsequent building permit applications. No formal action was taken on the monthly report; commissioners asked clarifying questions and accepted the update.
