Smith told the council that Chief Muns had provided guidance to Hero Fund USA on the nonprofits mission committee but said Muns abstained from the board vote on this award because of his involvement with the organization.
Smith described recent local fundraising efforts tied to the Graham Hoffman Memorial motorcycle ride, including a restaurant campaign and a police-escorted memorial ride that Smith said included more than 400 motorcycles and more than 550 riders. He praised Blue Springs officers who helped organize the police escort, singling out Officer Jordan Litz and Lieutenant Brandon Claxton for their work during the ride.
Chief Muns accepted the check and thanked Hero Fund USA. "We greatly appreciate being the 100th recipient of Hero Fund USA awards," he said, noting the department had already ordered the headsets and would take care of the invoice when it arrives.
Council members at the dais thanked Hero Fund USA for the donation and for the nonprofit's ongoing work in the region. Smith described his group as a small, volunteer-supported nonprofit with two staff members who help run the organization.
No city council vote or formal council action was recorded for accepting the check; the presentation occurred during the regular meeting agenda and concluded with photographs and applause.
