Council approves project scope increase for City Garage; council member presses for “state‑of‑the‑art” facility

On Aug. 4 the Blue Springs City Council approved consent agenda item 3g to adjust the scope and budget for a City Garage project after Council member Kaler asked whether features would be cut from the plan. Kaler said he wanted to avoid delivering “something second best” and argued city employees deserve a high‑quality facility.
“I'm just wanting to make sure, I don't want to settle for something second best. I think we need to have the state of the art,” Kaler said during the discussion.
A staff member identified as Steph (project staff) replied that the scope has grown over the years, that the project originally was planned about eight years ago, and that the budget had been increased to ensure necessary elements are included. Steph also said the project includes space for a police training room and that police would contribute to the project budget.
Council member Erickson moved approval of item 3g; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The council then proceeded to other agenda matters.
No formal budget amendment language or dollar figure for the scope increase was stated on the record during the consent discussion. Staff indicated that if reductions are necessary to stay within available funding, they would be made during project development. The approval advances the project to the next procurement and design steps under the city's project controls.
