Parks staff to phase outdoor aquatic center rebuild; bid will include alternates to limit next-season closures

Parks and Recreation staff told the advisory board that work on the outdoor aquatic center has been restructured into a two-year phased project to avoid extended closures next summer.
Luis said the decision follows coordination with the Jayhawk Watershed project and that the first phase will focus on the building, restrooms and site items that are not dependent on major concrete work. A later phase would address the pool deck, separation of pools and more extensive aquatic work.
Staff said they will issue an RFP with multiple bid alternates so the department can prioritize repairs and improvements that fit available funding. "Our basic bid that's gonna go out is gonna be pretty much the aquatics and do some of the work, especially in the restrooms. We have a bid alternate to improve the admission area," Luis told the board.
Why it matters: Phasing and alternates aim to keep the facility open through the coming season and reduce the risk of closing the pool for half of next summer, staff said. The board asked staff to provide updates as bids return and final scope choices are made.
