The City Commission voted Aug. 5 to initiate a consent island annexation process for a triangle tract identified as 4790 Skyway Drive, located east of the airport. Community Development Director Stephanie Peterson explained the property sits amid county-zoned land where surrounding parcels already support commercial and industrial uses. Peterson noted the city’s future-land-use map labels the tract as agricultural despite existing built development nearby; the owner is proposing an ICS zoning designation (industrial communities or commercial services) after annexation. Because the property is an "island annexation," the county must make three findings and adopt a resolution before the annexation proceeds; after county action there is a 30-day protest or appeal period. Peterson told commissioners the property owner would have three months after annexation to file a rezoning application. Commissioners approved the motion to initiate the annexation process by roll call; there were no public comments on the proposal at the hearing.
