Spring Hill council reviews charter rules for filling mayor and council vacancies ahead of 2026 swearing-in

Spring Hill city leaders spent the council's meeting reviewing how the city's 2024 charter ordinance will govern any vacancies that occur after the November election and before new officials are sworn in. City Attorney Spencer Lau summarized the updated process and council members discussed the practical and political implications of appointments, write-in possibilities and special elections.

The charter ordinance, adopted in October 2024, sets a two-tier vacancy approach for both mayor and council members, Lau said. If a vacancy occurs before Feb. 1 in an election year, an appointee fills the seat only until the next regular election for that seat; for council members that creates a shortened two-year term before the seat returns to its four-year cycle. For mayoral vacancies, the council president becomes mayor until the next regular mayoral election.
