Commission asks for fuller periodic summaries of discrimination intake and case status

At the Aug. 18 meeting the commission asked city staff for more detailed periodic summaries of discrimination intake, including the number of cases, open or closed status, and whether cases have concurrent state or federal remedies. Commissioners said a single-paragraph email does not provide enough detail for the commission to understand trends or whether filing with the city is the best available option for complainants.

Commissioners discussed a recent email from staff that noted several active cases; one commissioner said the report suggested there were four active cases and asked staff to include more context: which cases involved employers small enough that federal or state remedies would not apply, which cases were under investigation, and which were closed or in conciliation. The commission directed staff to ask the office that handles complaints to provide periodic summaries that include complaint counts, activity status (active, investigated, conciliated, closed), and trends while respecting privacy.

Staff and commissioners agreed on two points: summaries should be as detailed as possible without revealing private information, and staff should explain when complainants have alternative filing options at the state or federal level. Staff said they would ask the staff member who prepares the intake summaries — identified in the meeting as Zach Ferrell — for more detailed periodic reports.

No formal vote was taken; direction to staff was given to request more detailed periodic summaries and to include trends and case-status categories in future reports.
