Grand County commissioners unanimously proclaimed September 2025 as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month at their Aug. 19 meeting and highlighted several local events and training opportunities organized by 4 Corners Community Behavioral Health and local partners.
Local prevention leaders described planned activities: a free QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training on Sept. 9, a candlelight vigil on World Suicide Prevention Day on Sept. 10 at Swanee Park and a community suicide‑prevention walk on Oct. 4 at Grand High School. Presenters emphasized reducing stigma, learning warning signs and connecting people to resources including the suicide-crisis lifeline 988, statewide services and the local behavioral health agency.
The resolution recounts state and local suicide statistics and urges residents to learn warning signs and available resources.
Action: Commissioner McCurdy moved to approve the proclamation; Commissioner McCandless seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Why it matters: Local organizers say suicide rates in Carbon, Emery and Grand counties have been high relative to statewide data; commissioners and prevention partners said the month’s events aim to broaden awareness and local support networks.
