Northwest Region Teacher of the Year from Mitchell County launches teacher advisory council to brief commissioners

Taylor described the council as a monthly forum made up of each school's teacher of the year, the CTE teacher of the year and the beginning teacher of the year. The group will "meet once a month, talk about not just the negatives... but the cool things that we're doing in our schools," she said.
Why it matters: County leaders said they welcome opportunities to see classroom work firsthand and to hear teachers’ priorities. Commissioners and the school leader present at the meeting encouraged use of a visit-request form Taylor shared; the form asks which school and what time commissioners prefer.
Taylor described her recent statewide duties after being named the Northwest Region teacher of the year, including a state interview, visits to the executive mansion and work with the Education Policy Fellowship Program and a statewide teacher advisory body. Her regional slogan is "rooted and rising," which she said guides her efforts to spotlight rural classroom successes and challenges.
"We believe it's essential for our local leaders to hear directly from the people who are actually inside of the classrooms," Taylor said. She invited commissioners to use a QR-coded visit request form to schedule school visits and to receive agenda items from the council.
Board members said they would accept invitations to visit schools, either individually or in groups. Taylor said the council also intends to present at Board of Education meetings and at county commission meetings to show classroom examples and discuss local needs.
Ending: Taylor asked commissioners to complete the visit-request form and said council members will follow up; commissioners thanked her and congratulated her on the regional teacher recognition.
