Agricultural commissioner to host integrated-pest-management workshops after ground-squirrel concerns

Monica Nielsen, Mariposa County agricultural commissioner, told the Board of Supervisors on Sept. 2 that staff have received many calls about ground-squirrel problems and that recent legal changes limit homeowner control options.
Nielsen said the department provided an informational fair display on ground-squirrel control and left take-home materials. She said licensed pest-control businesses remain the primary avenue for treatment given changes in state law. Nielsen also announced an integrated pest management workshop covering updates to rodenticide rules, control of tree-of-heaven and blackberries, and pesticide-use rules for schools; the county’s program has been approved for continuing-education credit by the Department of Pesticide Regulation.
Nielsen said the department will host the next workshop in late October and will offer a total of 10 continuing-education hours for the year. She invited residents to pick up printed guidance at the ag-commissioner’s office.
No action was required; supervisors thanked the commissioner for outreach and educational efforts.
