Mariposa library highlights adult literacy program, says 41% of adults tested below third-grade reading level

Library staff briefed the Board of Supervisors on Sept. 2 about the county library’s adult literacy program and a month of literacy-themed events.
Matt Johnson, library staff, and Cheryl Berg, literacy coordinator, said the program helps adults gain reading, writing and digital skills and highlighted recent successes: an adult who completed a career-online high-school program and another who gained citizenship after tutoring. Berg cited an assessment used statewide, saying, "41 percent of adults in Mariposa County are below the third grade reading level," and asked the board to help spread the word and support volunteer recruitment.
The library will hold events in September including storytelling workshops, a Constitution Day discussion and monthly trivia nights, and staff said they post flyers, use social media and attend community events to reach residents. The board asked staff to share flyers with faith communities and other neighborhood outlets to broaden outreach.
No board action was required; supervisors thanked library staff and encouraged outreach to veterans and other groups.
