Land Use Committee approves text amendment to require special-use review for truck facilities

The amendment was drafted and vetted through the county’s land-use zoning subcommittee and discussed with surrounding municipalities; staff reported no municipal opposition was voiced to the draft.
Why it matters: County staff framed the amendment as a proactive, countywide regulatory tool to address development pressure tied to large logistics projects (the packet referenced proposals such as a CN intermodal facility and an Amazon warehouse). Without the amendment, staff said truck-related facilities could locate in unincorporated areas without consistent oversight.
Committee action: Eric moved the motion to approve the text amendment and KJ R seconded; the committee voted in favor and recommended the amendment to the County Board. The amendment packet included draft definitions, operational restrictions and enforcement provisions; staff said it would allow the county to impose conditions addressing access, hours, sewage/septic, screening and other operational issues during the special-use review.
Next steps: The County Board will receive the recommended amendment for consideration; if adopted, future truck-storage or repair proposals in unincorporated Grundy County would require special-use approval, giving the county a structured process to set site-specific conditions.
