Prem Pariar addressed the council during the Sept. 2 public-comment period to request that the City of Pinole place a resolution on a future agenda declaring caste a protected category. Pariar told the council he represents community members who have experienced caste-based discrimination in housing, workplaces, schools and public spaces, and that adding caste to the city—s protections would make Pinole—s commitment to equality explicit. He asked the council to take the matter up at an upcoming meeting and said such a resolution would align Pinole with other California cities and institutions that have taken similar steps. City staff said they would collect Pariar—s contact information and follow up. No formal action was taken on the resolution request during the Sept. 2 meeting.
