Schenectady — Mayor McCarthy and members of the Schenectady City Council acknowledged the recent death of Durst, a retired police canine who served in explosive detection.
Mayor McCarthy told the council that Durst began service in 2019 with his partner, Detective Doug Smith, and retired in June 2024 after five years of service. The mayor said Durst specialized in explosive detection and supported the U.S. Marshals Albany task force by providing perimeter security during high-risk operations.
The mayor thanked Durst for his service and acknowledged the roster of handlers and trainers who supported him, naming Detective Doug Smith and mentioning training and coordination support from leading coordinator Jeff Calder.
The council’s remarks were honorary; no formal action was taken. The acknowledgement appeared during the council’s announcements at the Aug. 11 meeting.
