Police department awarded $45,600 in state highway safety funds to supplement traffic enforcement

Lieutenant Scott told the finance committee the City of Schenectady Police Department has been awarded $45,600 from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) in partnership with the DMV under the New York Highway Safety Program.
Scott said the funds will supplement routine traffic-enforcement work and can be targeted to specific problem locations and campaigns such as distracted-driving and seat-belt enforcement and to support training (including Drug Recognition Expert training). He said the grant includes allocations for special state initiatives (for example, Click It or Ticket) and for pedestrian-safety education in high-pedestrian areas. Scott described the grant as a continuation of an ongoing partnership and said the department will use funds for directed patrols, targeted enforcement and training; some activities may be education-only with verbal warnings rather than citations.
Councilmembers thanked staff for securing recurring traffic-safety funding. The committee voted to move the grant award forward.
