Tooele City appoints two members to Tree Advisory Board to support Arbor Day and replacement planning

The Tooele City Council consented Aug. 6 to Mayor‑recommended appointments of Hyatt Gartus and Ian Hurley to the Tooele City Tree Advisory Board, approving Resolution 2025‑63 by a 5–0 vote.
Darvin Cook, the city’s parks and recreation director, said the Tree Advisory Board was reestablished under Ordinance 2021‑38 to support Tree City USA designation and that the board is a seven‑member volunteer panel with staggered three‑year terms. Cook said the positions were advertised after one member resigned for family reasons and another chose not to be reappointed.
Cook described Hurley as a long‑term resident currently attending Utah State who has studied urban ecology and environmental effects on urban tree health. Gartus (present at the meeting) holds a communications degree and expressed interest in promoting the city’s fall fruit‑tree giveaway and spring shade‑tree giveaway events, Cook said.
Councilman McCall moved to approve the resolution and Councilman Hansen seconded; the council voted aye: McCall, Hansen, Goaches, Manzion and Brady. The motion passed 5–0. Cook said the board will meet at least quarterly and will be tasked immediately with a tree‑replacement plan to address aging elm trees in a city park.
