City approves resolution to apply for boardwalk refurbishment grant

The Helena-West Helena City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a resolution allowing the Helena Advertising and Promotion Commission to apply for a matching grant from the Arkansas Office of Outdoor Recreation to refurbish the Riverpark boardwalk. Helen Halbert, executive director of the Helena Advertising and Promotion Commission, told the council the structure was dedicated in 1992 and now needs repairs and accessibility improvements. Halbert said the commission held a public meeting and would use AMP funds — paired with a state matching grant if awarded — to replace worn decking, fix an eroded transition where the boardwalk meets pavement, update signage and possibly add an observation binocular stand and a kayak dock. Mister Saint Columbia moved for approval and Mister Kyle Miller seconded; the motion passed on a 6–0 roll call. Halbert said she would keep the council informed about the application and any award decisions and expected to know results before the end of the year.
