Orange council adopts speed-limit reductions on State Highway 62 and FM 3247; school-zone codified

The Orange City Council approved ordinances on Aug. 26 lowering speed limits on state-maintained highways within city limits and codified an existing school zone.
City staff presented the ordinances for State Highway 62 and FM 3247 and recommended the changes for public-safety reasons. For State Highway 62, the northern section from the city limits to near 8 Gate Road (north of Arabia Road) was reduced from 75 mph to 65 mph; the southern segment from that point to just north of 1078 was reduced from 75 mph to 70 mph. For FM 3247 (Martin Luther King Drive), the northern section from west of Little Cypress Grove subdivision to a point south of Adams Bayou Bridge was reduced from 65 mph to 60 mph; the section from Adams Bayou Bridge to just south of the I‑10 frontage road was reduced from 55 mph to 50 mph.
Council also adopted an ordinance codifying an existing school zone on FM 3247—from just north of Hillbrook Drive to just north of the frontage road—with a 35 mph limit during school hours. City staff recommended approval of all three measures for the safety, health and welfare of the traveling public.
Each ordinance passed on recorded council votes during the Aug. 26 meeting. The first readings had occurred earlier; the council completed the readings and adopted the ordinances as presented.
