Friends and family of Cruz "CJ" Gomez attended the Pecos City Council meeting Aug. 28 to request a plaque commemorating Gomez—s work coaching youth at Cyclone Ballpark Field No. 2. A family representative presented plaque wording and a preferred location; attendees said CJ frequently practiced and coached at Field No. 2.
Councilmembers expressed support for honoring Gomez and directed staff to add the proposal to a future meeting agenda so the council can consider formal naming or sponsorship language and placement. A committee member noted the family also plans a scholarship and a memorial game in October as part of ongoing remembrance efforts.
No formal naming or sponsorship action was taken at the Aug. 28 meeting; the matter will be listed on the council's next agenda for action.
