The Keep Pecos Beautiful committee presented its 2024—1025 activities Aug. 28, showcasing new benches, self-watering planters on Oak Street, murals at the splash pad and Maxey Park, a veterans mural ribbon-cutting and a downtown lighting project whose cables are installed and await fixture mounting.
Committee Chair Juanita D—Avila Mata thanked the mayor and council for financial support and administration liaison Griffin Moreland for assistance; the committee said most projects are complete except for the downtown lighting. Committee volunteers recounted success with a facade competition and additional benches placed in the 300 block of Oak Street.
Members also presented "before and after" images of cleanup sites and urged the council to ensure consistent enforcement of municipal ordinances to maintain improvements. Councilmembers praised the volunteers and approved reappointments: Tita Tarin, Brenda McKinney, Alba Alvarez, and Juanita D—Avila Mata were reappointed and Claire Winick was appointed to fill a vacancy. The mayor and city manager serve as ex officio members of the committee.
