The City Council of Orange on June 24 approved an ordinance consenting to the Orangefield Water Supply Corporation’s petition to convert into a special utility district.
At the meeting, a representative for the water supply corporation explained the change: “Water Supply Corporation is actually a nonprofit corporation and it does not get the benefit that a governmental entity does,” and that conversion to a special utility district is being pursued under the Texas Administrative Code. The representative said the conversion “doesn't” change existing customers.
The representative told the council the corporation’s certificate of convenience and necessity crosses the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction and that Bridge City and Vidor had already given consent. A council member who previously worked on a similar conversion in Mauriceville described the change as beneficial.
Councilmember votes were recorded as aye from McKenna, Salter, Childs, Chandler, Mortimer and Birch; the motion passed. The ordinance language on the agenda states it would become effective upon passage and adoption.
