The Legislative Audit Committee considered a request to audit the Colorado Energy Office (CEO) on May 27 but the motion to authorize the audit failed after a roll‑call vote.
Senator Pelton, who requested the review, said the office’s increasing responsibilities and funding warranted an audit to examine program selection, staffing levels, and the accounting of funds, including any money managed outside the state treasury. The Office of the State Auditor presented a memo noting possible audit questions: whether CEO establishes effective processes for selecting and managing programs; whether CEO allocates staff and fiscal resources in alignment with legislative mandates; and a full accounting of funds administered by CEO, including any outside the state treasury.
Representative Wilford voiced opposition to authorizing a full audit at this time, saying CEO already undergoes annual financial reviews and that many federal programs with new funds were just getting started; Wilford said a large audit might be premature. After a roll call the motion failed 4 yes, 3 no, with one member excused. The committee’s vote leaves the CEO request unapproved for an audit at this time; proponents may request the committee reconsider in the future.
