Elko County Regional Transportation Commission members voted Wednesday to approve an RTC apportionment request by Elko County totaling $2,667,000 to support county road projects.
The vote followed a presentation from Dennis Price, Elko County road superintendent, who reviewed current and upcoming county paving and maintenance work. Price said the county completed its magnesium chloride (mag) program this season and now treats about 150 miles of road. He also outlined planned surface treatments: type 2 and type 3 slurries, chip seals and specific roadway targets.
“That project is substantially complete,” Price said of the recently finished Lucky Nugget Road paving. He said the county paved roughly 1.78 miles and has opened the road with only a few punch-list items remaining. Price added crews will perform type 2 treatments on South Fork Road and a majority of Lucky Nugget Road up to the new paving limits, and will apply a type 2 to Lower Lee Road. In the Spring Creek area, Price said the county will do a type 3 slurry on the entire length of Palace Parkway. He also said design work for Spring Valley Parkway is ongoing and that project is scheduled for next summer; the county expects to go out to bid in late winter or early spring.
Price noted rising material costs: “The mag costs for the material itself has gone up every year. I think we’re paying $138 a ton now,” he said, contrasting current prices with rates below $100 per ton a few years ago.
After the update, a commissioner moved to approve the county’s apportionment request in the amount presented. The motion was seconded and carried with all present voting in favor.
The commission meeting packet and the county presentation include additional line-item details and schedules for the projects Price described. The action authorizes distribution of the RTC apportionment; implementation and contractor scheduling will follow standard county procurement and construction procedures.
