The commission approved a petition to vacate unused alley and right‑of‑way segments in the Midas townsite, reverting the strips to adjacent subdivision parcels and allowing owners to clean up parcel boundaries.
The Elko County Planning Commission approved a request from the Stern Family 2007 Trust and Ryan and Danielle Remmer to vacate unused public right‑of‑way (alley and portions of South Street) in the town of Midas. Planning staff reported the rights‑of‑way in question are unimproved and not used to access other parcels; vacating them will allow adjacent parcel owners to consolidate remnant strips and clear title issues.
Bob Thibault of High Desert Engineering explained that the vacation will resolve a long‑standing remnant strip that split ownership near a garage and other improvements. Staff said the vacated right‑of‑way will generally revert to adjacent subdivision parcels as provided in the subdivision map and county policy; for the alley, the north half reverts to the north parcel and the south half to the south parcel, while some remnants revert to parcels inside the original subdivision.
Staff recommended approval with conditions; the commission moved to approve the vacation application and the motion carried. Planning staff noted some adjacent parcels are county‑owned or owned by Nevada Gold Mines and that county records and possible donations for cemetery protection were discussed as part of clearing title and land use in the area.
The applicants indicated they will proceed with parcel consolidation or reversion to acreage and follow the county’s mapping requirements after the vacation is recorded.
