Anaheim: No long-term Angel Stadium talks; structural testing underway, final report expected mid-2026

Anaheim — The city manager told the council on Aug. 26 that there are "no long term discussions taking place and none imminent" concerning Angel Stadium of Anaheim and that a phased structural assessment of the stadium is under way.

City staff and outside consultants are carrying out engineering testing on concrete and metal columns in the stadium when the team is away and when there are no events, the manager said. The testing program is roughly one-third complete and is expected to continue into the fall; a final, contracted engineering assessment based on the tests and prior visual inspections is expected in mid-2026.

The manager also said the city must first address issues under the Surplus Land Act in any future consideration of a sale or lease of the stadium site. "A clear takeaway from the briefings is that we first must address the Surplus Land Act issue in the event of any consideration of a sale or a lease," the city manager said.

Why it matters: The stadium and its surplus land are high-profile city assets, and the update is the latest step in a multi-year review the council asked staff to perform as part of a broader strategic plan for the stadium site.

Other context: The manager noted the city is in what he described as the second phase of an ongoing assessment directed by the city attorney's office and working with the Angels as the stadium tenant. The manager added that the updated structural testing follows an initial visual assessment completed in 2023.

The manager also reported on the Anaheim Convention Center: the recent 2025 Pokémon World Championships drew more than 30,000 attendees per day across a three-day event and produced more than 12,000 hotel room nights, the office said.

Next steps: Staff expect to complete testing this fall and to hire an engineering firm to perform a final assessment; city officials said they expect the final assessment to be available by mid-2026.
