At the Aug. 14, 2025 meeting of the Elko County Local Emergency Planning Committee, emergency managers and partner agencies outlined several fall training events and exercises intended to sharpen regional response capabilities, including an earthquake tabletop planned for October or November and a hospital HAZMAT tabletop tied to an updated healthcare preparedness assessment.

Committee leaders said the sessions will involve local fire, bomb-squad and decontamination teams, hospitals, mine operators and state agencies to exercise decontamination, evacuation and monitoring procedures. The training announcements were informational; the committee did not take formal action on the items.

James Johnson, city of local fire, described a recent one-day drill that included a decontamination exercise and monitoring equipment training: "I just wanted to inform that we, had a 1 day drill with the CST, the 90 second out of Carson City and with the Elko Bomb Squad. Went over decontamination procedures, drilled, and then also had a monitoring, class where they had all the monitoring equipment from the bond squad and then all also from our cache and, started a a really good, curriculum that we're gonna try to spread out throughout each quarter, for the rest of the year." He said the curriculum will be distributed across quarters and that attendees will be updated on dates and times.

Mike Carpiletti of Ormat, Nevada, reported on an emergency action plan drill at Ormat's Tuscarora plant that focused on a wildland fire scenario and whether evacuation of the plant would be required: "we had a, EAP or emergency action plan drill at the Tuscarora plant. And we focused, today on discussion and the drill for there was a wildland fire in the area, whether it would constitute and how it would constitute the evacuation of our plant, which we did." Carpiletti said Ormat conducted a preplanned phone call with regional dispatch as part of the exercise and that they identified lessons learned to carry into future drills.

Jen Tingle, Convergent Health Surgery Center, said the center has an updated healthcare preparedness assessment and plans a tabletop exercise to rehearse response to a derailment HAZMAT incident behind the facility. She said, "we will be running probably a tabletop exercise. JJ is gonna be coming over to the center so that we can have a planning meeting together for that for tabletop exercise for a trained derailment HAZMAT behind the surgery center. So I'll be sending out invitations just probably for Lee and Matt right now and then we'll kinda go from there." The date is to be determined.

Amos Holler, State Division of Public and Labor Health, told the committee planners are targeting an earthquake tabletop for late October or November and that Elko County will lead invites and planning for the exercise.

Chris McCann, EMS chief for Elko County, read a list of regionwide training opportunities distributed by the state office, including an emergency preparedness class on aging-population needs (Zoom, Sept. 20), a Pershing County hazmat functional exercise on Oct. 10 (open to participants or observers), the Region 3 integrated preparedness meeting scheduled Oct. 21–23, and a wide-area search class in Winnemucca Oct. 24–26 focused on door-to-door urban searches.

Nancy Abrams, representing Intermountain Health (formerly Classic Medex), said the Ruby Mountain resiliency training will replace the county's mental health summit this year and is scheduled for Sept. 12.

The committee did not vote on any training items at the meeting. Organizers said they will circulate invitations and schedules as dates are confirmed.
