At the May 29 meeting of the Elko County Local Emergency Planning Committee, local emergency officials reviewed recent training exercises and announced several planned drills intended to test multiagency response and improve communications.
The GBC drill "went really well, and everyone participated," Deputy Chief Daniel Hassett said, adding that participating teams included mine fire departments and bomb squads. "We did find some issues that need to work, mostly communication around the communication area, but we'll be working on that and hopefully getting that handled in the next year," Hassett said.
The review put an emphasis on interagency coordination. Committee members reported multi‑county participation in a regional hazardous materials exercise organized by Humboldt and Lander counties and evaluated by FEMA's National Exercise Division. James Johnston, chief (recorded as Chief Johnston), said the county will host a civil support team exercise in August that organizers hope will include a decontamination class. "They're trying to incorporate a decon class with it," Johnston said.
Other training and exercise plans announced at the meeting included:
- A hands‑on fire investigator refresher hosted by the Bureau of Land Management on June 11 with an online morning session and a remote practical component;
- Wildland firefighter classes in June covering firefighter I, chainsaw, and pump operations (dates to follow);
- An emergency action plan drill for the Tuscarora Geothermal facility scheduled for Aug. 14, for which Ormat representatives requested support developing the scenario; and
- A school drill in Wells on May 19 that committee members said they would like to make an annual exercise.
"BLM is hosting a fire investigator refresher on June 11," Matt Peterson said, asking anyone interested to reach out. Mike Revoletti of Ormat asked for support for the Tuscarora scenario, saying, "On August 14, we're going to have a drill for the Tuscarora Geothermal facility for the emergency action plan drill." Nancy Abrams said the Wells school intends to hold the drill annually.
The committee reminded attendees that Nevada Division of Emergency Management courses are listed on the NTQS website and encouraged agencies to register for classes and exercises.
The exercise reviews and planning items were presented as information; no formal policy changes were made at the meeting.
